I have been looking for the perfect, right, even “just better” dining room chairs ever since we purchased our Saarinen table a few years ago. Prior to this table, we had an old, beat up Duncan Phyfe table and matching chairs. Until I could find the right chairs, I just recovered the seats of the existing chairs and called it a day.
This picture was taken a couple of years ago, and not much has changed. Then I saw these chairs on Craigslist a couple of weeks ago, and think I’ve found a match that won’t break the bank.
Nice, huh? Milo Baughman / DIA attributed, and the chrome is still in great shape. Here’s what they look like in the room. Even in their current state, they’re a big improvement. I didn’t realize just how ‘hard’ the room looked with the antique chairs until I brought in some more upholstery.
So, now the question is how, or in what fabric to reupholster them? I originally liked the idea of gold velvet, but when I got these in the room, that color just kind of melts into the floor. So now I’m leaning towards a more vibrant color, probably in velvet and probably a solid. But I’m not sure about that, either.
I went to a bunch of local fabric stores, and spent a lot of time searching online, and I found quite a few options. One of my friends suggested red or deep red to bring out the red in the Murakami lithograph in the background. But then I’m thinking I need to do something that looks great with the marble but still coordinates with the living room. Maybe red isn’t the right answer. So that’s my dilemma. Solid or patterned? Blush? Emerald? Burgundy? or RED red?
What would you do?
Thanks so much for stopping by!
